FREE Guided Walking Tours of Manatee Village Historical Park

Learn about the Village of Manatee and women in early Manatee County with FREE docent guided walking tours of Manatee Village Historical Park… March is both Heritage Days in Manatee County and National Women’s History Month. To celebrate, the Historical Park will be opening a new temporary exhibit in the Wiggins General Store on March 9, “Progressive Women: Herstory in Florida, 1840-1918”. This exhibit will explore topics like education reform, women in industry, and the women’s suffrage movement in Florida as a whole, with highlights on women in Manatee County. As an exhibit opening celebration, Manatee Village Historical Park staff and docents will lead free guided walking tours of Manatee Village. The last tour will depart at 3pm. 2 themes will alternate: one tour will give an intro to the general history of the Village of Manatee and the other will celebrate Women’s History Month with insights into the impact of women in Manatee County, with a highlight on the role women have played in Historic Preservation in this area. Archaeology Works: Heritage Monitoring Scouts

Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS Florida) is a public engagement program focused on tracking changes to archaeological sites at risk, particularly those impacted by climate change in the form of erosion and sea level rise. Join Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) staff for this information session to learn how to become a heritage monitoring scout. We will talk about threats to archaeological sites, how to identify some common site types and artifacts, and the best way to record and monitor them. Space is limited. In celebration of the 2018 Florida Archaeology Month, \"Heritage at Risk,\" the Deering Estate will host its 6th annual Archaeology Day. Activities and programs for the entire family include hands-on activities and walking tours of the Estate\'s unique natural areas. Admission is reduced to $7 for ages 4 & older. Every March, statewide programs and events celebrating Florida Archaeology Month are designed to encourage Floridians and visitors to learn more about the archaeology and history of the state, and to preserve these important parts of Florida\'s rich cultural heritage. This year\'s theme is dedicated to how sea level rise will affect important archaeological sites and landmarks in Florida. Florida Archaeology Month is coordinated by the Florida Anthropological Society, and supported by the Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. Additional sponsors for 2018 include the Florida Archaeological Council, Florida Public Archaeology Network, state and local museums, historical commissions, libraries, and public and private school systems.
