Join us for the opening reception of our new temporary exhibit, “Stolen: The Archaeology of Slave Wrecks,” featuring a special guest speaker.
This free event is open to the public, and the reception will feature complimentary light food and beverages.
This exhibit explores the often-overlooked history of sunken slave ships. This exhibit sheds light on ongoing archaeological research that uncovers the stories of these ships, their captives, and the legacies of the transatlantic slave trade. It highlights three significant slave ships: Henrietta Marie, Guerrero, and Clotilda.
We are honored to welcome our special guest speaker, (Ret) USN Chief Lewis, a native of Africatown, AL, and President of VETS (Visualize Everyone That Serves), a nonprofit working with youth and communities along the Gulf Coast. He is also the owner of Africatown Souvenirs and the author of The Making of a Chief and The Return. Chief Lewis has been entrusted by the Clotilda Descendants Association and Africatown leaders to lead the Return Pilgrimage to Africatown, AL, preserving the legacy of the last known slave ship to arrive in the U.S.
We hope you can join us for this thought-provoking event!
