Heritage Monitoring Scouts: Learn to be a Scout!

FPAN Coordinating Center and Tarkiln Bayou State Park

Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS Florida) is a public engagement program focused on tracking changes to archaeological sites at risk, particularly those impacted by climate change in the form of erosion and sea level rise. Join Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) staff for this fun workshop to learn how to become a Heritage Monitoring Scout! We will talk about threats to archaeological sites, how to identify some common site types and artifacts, and the best way to record and monitor them. This workshop includes presentations in the morning at the Florida Public Archaeology Network Coordinating Center (207 E Main Street, Pensacola), a break for lunch, and some site monitoring practice in the afternoon at Tarkiln Bayou State Park (2401 Bauer Road, Pensacola)! Archaeology Day at the Deering Estate

In celebration of the 2019 Florida Archaeology Month, “Making Collections Accessible,” and the 90th anniversary of Miami-Dade Parks, the Deering Estate will host its 7th annual Archaeology Day on Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Programs for the entire family include a variety of hands-on activities and walking tours of the Estate’s unique natural areas. General admission for adults is reduced to $10 and children (ages 4-14) $7. Every March, statewide programs and events celebrating Florida Archaeology Month are designed to encourage Floridians and visitors to learn more about the archaeology and history of the state, and to preserve these important parts of Florida’s rich cultural heritage. This year’s theme is dedicated to giving the general public access to historical information and artifacts. Florida Archaeology Month is coordinated by the Florida Anthropological Society, and supported by the Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. Additional sponsors for 2019 include the Florida Archaeological Council, Florida Public Archaeology Network, state and local museums, historical commissions, libraries, and public and private school systems.

Join us for an archaeology-themed day of activities and events to celebrate Florida Archaeology Month! Schedule at a glance: 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM – Introduction and Presentations 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM – Open Archaeology Lab and AWIARE Lab tours (Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult) 10:30 PM – 2:00 PM – Pop Up Exhibit 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Site Hike and Tour (Registration Required) Start at 10:00 AM with archaeologists from the FPAN and the USF and hear 2 short presentations on exciting new archaeological research going on now at Weedon Island. Kendal Jackson, a Ph.D. student at USF and Heather Draskovich, MA student at USF, will discuss their work exploring new lines of archaeological research in the Preserve. From 10:30 – 12, get your hands dirty at our open archaeology lab and help sort and wash real artifacts.
