Archaeology in Florida State Parks

Lakes Region Branch Library, 1511 Druid Road Inverness, FL 34452

March 8, 10:00:00 AM — 11:30:00 AM

When people first realize archaeology happens in Florida, it often surprises them to hear of how many active permits are issued to do work in state parks. Some of the digs are by field school where students learn the ABCs of excavation, while other digs are done in advance of construction or improvements to a park. Come on out to the Lakes Region Branch Library to hear the Florida Public Archaeology Network give this interesting talk.

Smoke on the Water: The Archaeology of Camp Brown Exhibit Opening

207 East Main Street, Pensacola, FL 32502

March 8, 05:30:00 PM — 08:00:00 PM

Join us at the FPAN Coordinating Center\'s Destination Archaeology Resource Center on March 8th, 2019, for the opening night of this exciting new exhibit in celebration of Florida Archaeology Month! Under the dark morning sky of October 9, 1861, a fire lit up an infantry camp among the dunes of Santa Rosa Island, and smoke floated on the water of Pensacola Bay. By the light of the blaze, Federal and Confederate soldiers could distinguish between friend or foe as they resumed battle over the next several hours. The site they bled and died on during the Civil War is now part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. While the fort they fought to control still stands, the story of the battle is preserved in the sand. In 2016, archaeologists investigated the area where the Battle of Santa Rosa Island occurred. Because the site is protected, archaeologists were able to define the location of the federal camp destroyed in the aftermath of the battle. Artifacts for this exhibit are on loan from the National Park Service\'s Southeast Archeological Center.
