On March 9th from 9am to 12pm the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) will be partnering with the Florida Park Service and Jefferson County Historical Association to offer a Heritage Monitoring Scouts workshop. The classroom portion of the workshop will take place at the Wirick Simmons House (230 N Jefferson St, Monticello, FL 32344) and the practical portion will be held at Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park. This workshop is free and open to anybody with an interest in archaeology, but advanced registration is required. To register individuals need to contact Barbara Clark, FPAN Regional Director, at BarbaraAClark@uwf.edu. This workshop is free and open to adults and children with parent or guardian present.

Shipwreck Tagging Archaeological Management Program (STAMP) Workshop

The Shipwreck Tagging and Archaeological Management Program (STAMP) is a public engagement program focused on documenting and monitoring shipwreck sites and disarticulated shipwreck timbers along Florida’s coasts. Join Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) staff for this fun workshop to learn how to become a STAMP volunteer! We will discuss how archaeological shipwreck sites change over time, how to identify shipwreck timbers, and how volunteers can help archaeologists protect and record these important remnants of our past. This workshop includes presentations in the morning at the Fort Pickens Discovery Center (1400 Fort Pickens Road, Pensacola Beach), a break for lunch, and some site monitoring practice in the afternoon in Gulf Islands National Seashore! 12TH ANNUAL FORT CHOKONIKLA REENACTMENT

Join us for the 12th Annual Fort Chokonikla Reenactment on March 9-10th, 2019 at Paynes Creek Historic State Park in Bowling Green, Florida. The encampment and reenactment takes place near the actual site of Paynes Creek trade store massacre and Fort Chokonikla, which was built shortly after. This signature Fort Chokonikla Encampment Reenactment event runs from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm on both days with reenactments scheduled at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. The Fort Chokonikla Reenactment, which is recreated by staff and volunteers, reveals the sequence of events that occurred on July 17, 1849. In late 1849, Fort Chokonikla was built in close proximity to the trading post as the first outpost in a chain of forts established to control the Seminoles in Florida. The story comes to life through living history narration providing a wonderful learning experience for the entire family. The Fort Chokonikla Reenactment features black powder demonstrations, period-specific arts and crafts vendors, and children\'s activities. Food vendors will be on site to provide refreshments and various forms of food. $3 per motor vehicle. $2 for pedestrians and bicyclists. NO ADDITIONAL COST for the event

Archaeology Lab Day at the Safety Harbor Museum

Ever wonder what archaeologists do with all that stuff they dig up at archaeological sites once the fieldwork is finished? Join archaeologists from the University of South Florida and the Florida Public Archaeology Network at this Volunteer Lab and you can find out for yourself! Learn how artifacts and other archaeological material get processed in the laboratory so that researchers can use them to discover new information about past people. You will get the chance to sort through, identify, and wash real artifacts recently uncovered in Safety Harbor at Philippe Park as part of an ongoing research project led by USF archaeologists. All ages are welcome to participate or observe; children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. No experience necessary.

Gritt Tempered II: Famous Women in Florida Archaeology

In 1991 the book Grit Tempered: Early Women Archaeologists in the Southeastern United States was published to highlight to contributions of women who made archaeology what it is today. Since that time, the tradition of strong women archaeologists has continued. This talk presupposes a Grit Tempered II sequel and nominates five phenomenal Florida women for consideration: Kathleen Deagan (St. Augustine), Judy Bense (Pensacola), Bonnie McEwan (Tallahassee), Rebecca Saunders (Amelia Island) and Nancy White (Gulf Coast). Come learn more about these women, their enduring impact on how we understand our past, and the sites that made them famous.
